Saber Jelokhani-Niaraki, a faculty member of ASRI and the national coordinator for animal genetic resources, participated in the 13th session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, held at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
He presented a lecture titled “The State of Animal Genetic Resources in Iran,” which highlighted the numerous challenges Iran faces in the conservation of its animal genetic resources. These challenges include the extinction of certain Iranian livestock breeds, significant population declines in various breeds, and the obstacles encountered by both the government and livestock farmers in conserving animal genetic resources. At the end of his presentation, he appealed to the FAO for financial and technical support to address the issues surrounding the conservation of animal genetic resources in Iran, particularly in light of the severe population declines.
This workshop and meeting, which lasted from November 18 to November 22, was attended by representatives from different countries all over the world.
